One of my classmates has repeatedly called me privileged in a derogatory way, but then announced she's having a party "just because." The venue is $1k. There's going to be free food, a DJ, and an open bar, plus maid service to clean up at the end (when I refused her request to, mostly because I don't plan to be up that late). Uhh...I can't afford all that. Who's privileged again?
Just today she made fun of me, saying my favorite clothing store is Wal-Mart. (I wouldn't say I have a favorite clothing store at all, but I do buy clothes from there.) Last week she was complaining that the button popped off her thousand dollar jeans! I'm not saying there's no benefit to being white. But there's also benefit to having so much money you buy thousand dollar jeans without thinking twice. IMO, money opens more doors than skin color. I'm not trying to start a fight. It's just something that made me mad this week.
