A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
I have reviewed for newbies. The first thing I do for any reviews is visiting the portfolio to find out about the member I am doing a review for so I can get an idea about: Is English their first or second language--this makes a difference because it affects their writing in different ways. Also just because they are new to WDC doesn't mean they are new to English or writing. Finding out about their country of origin also has an impact on such things as spelling and grammar. Knowing what genres they are interested in and other information gives me a sense of who they are. I do this for members new or who I have not reviewed before. Being prepared as much as possible to do a helpful and thorough review makes a huge difference in the quality of the review. Sometimes I read an item a few times and other times I read it more, or I read it and then let it incubate and return the next day or so and reread. If I start a review and find a stumbling block I will stop and go back to it later. I have found that rushing or forcing a review is detrimental to me and does not help the person for whom I am reviewing. I review as much as possible because I am writing, reading, learning, and helping a writer. Constructive reviewing for me is a treasure given and received. I don't mind when reviewers are honest and show me where and how to improve my skills. I want to do this for members also. I am interested in helping all members of WDC. Taking a newbie under my wing is fine with me, I'll do what I can for anyone, but if they are having difficulties beyond my ability to help them I will try to find help from someone else or another source for them. Many times it takes a while for new members to get used to this community and all of the wonderful opportunities. Overwhelm can slow things down a bit, so I simply wait until they get caught up and then we can move forward. Sometimes someone may not mesh well in personality, that's OK, time to find someone they can relate to and get help. I try to be flexible. Safe travels and many blessings.
