Another view is that perhaps writing a story within a story may be where your talents and imagination are taking you. You're on a journey of discovery, imagination, wild ideas, what if things aren't what they seem, or what if there is a dual or multiple personalities, or what if this is the view from someone who has scrambled thinking and the other view is actually reality, or what if there are two different worlds and characters, and issues which will collide and create whatever your imagination conjures?
Go with what happens and incorporate what you know for sure or have already put into place. Whatever treasure you find on your story journey, cherish them, you can use all or some for your NaNoWriMo and save the unused treasures for another project.
