The Stellae mythology is based on astrology, and that means that family will have nothing to do with it in any regard. What will happen is that there will regularly be planetary conjunctions [*] of the type associated with a Stellae. If the "slot" is filled, then nothing will happen when the conjunction occurs. If the slot is unfilled, then other operations will come into play. There will be a time when the conjunction is at its optimum, and there will be a spot on the earth where the window opens.[**] If there is a birth there, then the child will be a Stellae. Their distribution therefore is bound to be widely scattered. This is one reason I super-duper do not like the idea of additional Stellae popping up in Saratoga Falls, and imaj had to sell me VERY HARD on the advantages of placing a Stellae in Cuthbert *and* in making her a relative of Will's. In the end, it was a story-driven decision, and to this day I get nose bleeds when I consider the sheer improbability of it. And no, I'm not going to use that improbability as an excuse to retcon to a different explanation. ;) [*] As I understand it "conjunctions" in astrology are not at all the same thing as conjunctions in astronomy; it doesn't mean the planets are near each other in the night sky. It has to do with their placement relative to each other within a certain astrological framework. [**] Again, as I understand astrological theory, the windows for place and time are so narrow that the odds are greatly against any two people having the same natal horoscope, and much is made of coincidences when two individuals are proved to have been born within a mile of each other and within six minutes of each other, because that's just about how wide the windows are. |
