Writing Software: What works, what doesn't work, and why

I'm on a fixed income so I always go for the software that is free. I've downloaded yWriter, bibisco, and SmartEdit Writer. I think all three are worth exploring. I've liked yWriter the best. It could be because it's the one most like Scrivener, which I can't afford.

Still, all three have a tendency to make me feel claustrophobic. Everything I supposedly need is so menacingly close. I decided to explore the idea of using LibreOffice, a free version of Microsoft Office. The only things Libre is missing are functions I can get in other free programs--except for auto daily word count. At least I haven't found a workaround for that yet.
