Grieving a Friend 298

“You did that on purpose!” Rachel’s face was red and her eyes shot fire.

“I was trying to get your attention,” Mark shot back.

“Kicking me is not an appropriate way to get my attention,” Rachel said with a flick of her head.

“I can’t get you to listen to me. I was trying to tell you that Angela Patterson is behind us.” Rachel and her brother Mark were standing in line to see the latest Avengers movie. She and Mark had earned enough money through odd jobs in the neighborhood to pay for tickets to opening day. They had been planning this for weeks.

“Angela?” Rachel’s lips turned up in a scowl. Her brother was annoying, but he was protective of her. Angela was not Rachel’s favorite person. They had been best friends in elementary school. But Angela started changing in middle school and she suddenly decided that she was too good for Rachel. It had hurt Rachel when Angela had started hanging out with Sarah Struthers and the other girls who had decided they were superior to most of the other kids in school. When Angela had joined the cheerleading team, Rachel knew that they would no longer be friends. Rachel could not live up to their standards because she was awkward and liked reading more than she liked playing sports. Rachel sighed. Would she ever survive high school?

Rachel looked back at Angela who was laughing with her expensively dressed girlfriends.

“You ok Rae?” Mark asked.

“Yeah. I’m fine. She was never really my friend anyway.” Rachel tried to appear as if she did not care. She knew she was a liar though. She still grieved the loss of her friend. “I know,” said Mark and squeezed her shoulders. He knew she was lying too.
