Re: What makes a writing competiton a success?
If you look at even some of the most interesting writing competitions here, they often only get 1 or 2 entries. That's not always the case, of course, but it often is (unfortunately it's the nature of the beast).

Bribery often isn't the best course - I think having an "in" to a proactive network is.

I have tried bribery with my own big competitons - offering publication in an ebook, multiple merit badges for 1 win, large GPs etc, etc. Some months I would get multiple entries, some months I would get none. All for the same effort on my part.

My favourite writing competition has been "Invalid Item"  Open in new Window. by A Guest Visitor . It's esoteric and seemingly unlinked month by month but it's fun and it's lets people have carte blanche. I don't know if it's the best on WDC but it's been the most fun contest I've entered.

I also like, but have never entered (yet) "WEIRD TALES CONTEST "  Open in new Window. by Beacon's Anchor Author Icon . Groovy covers, imaginative prompts (by virtue of those groovy covers), great entries. One day I will enter.

My most often entered competition would be the "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge"  Open in new Window. by Arakun the twisted raccoon Author Icon and it has become my go-to writing block/writing inspiration source.
