A message forum discussing the craft of writing. I often repost articles for discussion. |
Perhaps you have a loose-construction. Do you say that butter knife is a screwdriver just because it can drive screws? Do you ignore the damage to the screw and the knife that results? Sure, I can run a register day in and day out for over a decade, but doesn't make it right. It deadens my soul and there is significant loss in misdirected money and error-data entry, not to mention the fact that if I were used properly, I would produce much more value. It is wrong to do so as anything but a temporary stop gap, but there it is. Writing is a labor intensive task that pays poorly for 99.99% of the people. It's something that, unless you get something intrinsic from it that you don't get from delegating, you are doing the wrong thing. If you are doing the wrong thing by writing, I would say that you are not a writer. I don't know what: perhaps a hack, or a slave, or a fool. Of course there are other levels. Somebody who is a writer but is writing things that should be sent to other people, for example. It's not a simple thing, it calls for a deep philosophical analysis. |
