A message forum discussing the craft of writing. I often repost articles for discussion. |
originally posted at my writers blog https://fingersofthunder.wordpress.com/ I have developed a new writing formula for plotting scenes. It is a breakdown process suitable for the smaller story arcs that should be found in any longer narrative. It is quite simple and has only 5 steps in the form of questions to be answered. What is the Writer’s Purpose? What is the Character Goal? How Does it Follow The Plot Path? What is the Conflict? What is the Resolution? The purpose of this writing framework is to aid cohesion and make the process of choosing which possible scene to include in your story. Learn a framework, and you can hang anything on it. Learn the structure of haiku, and you can make a poem out of any sentiment. Learn the structure of a short story (dialogue, characters, description, 3 tries and 2 fails, endings and beginnings and middles; learn the structures within structures), and you can turn any idea into narrative prose. Learn a romantic language; learn an Arabic language; learn a programming language;learn how to sew. Having a list of questions ready as a checklist against making the wrong choices is one of the strongest frameworks you can create. You can build anything you can conceive, as long as you’ve got the foundation just right. What is the most important question you ask yourself when choosing which scenes to write about in your narratives? |
