Hear WDC poets read their poems aloud |
Well, the inflection changed more than the pace... Emphasis not pausing. But the words themselves dictate flow more than anything else. You pause for punctuation, but how long do you really pause when listing something? Like... "I need to get eggs, milk, bread"? It wouldn't sound good to pause forever, but a half beat longer than normal would make it more dramatic Spaces that ripple outward like that also tend to flow smoothly... One leading to another. But again, it depends on what the words are. Slow, smooth, lovely... Those three would be slower than slip, slide, gone. Really, I guess word choice and tone and placement and punctuation... They all matter a bit. Plus, I read this sorta fast in general. It's like... A sweet-talker sales pitch that's over too fast, if you know what I mean. I debated just flying through it for effect, but not for the very first recording. Anyway, I'll do some more.
