I think given what you have outlined and said in your responses above this is going to be one instance where it is okay for your character to live in his head; to plan, to plot, to reflect upon his past and what lead him here, where he is going, where he wants to be, self doubt, worry (family, friends, others, self) etc. Also, being in this situation he would be going through the natural stages of grief if for no other reason than he has lost his freedom and the right to live his life on his terms. The five stages of grief are: denial/isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. Now you often hear about these stages in relation to death and dying but it certainly is not limited to that. Individuals who go through loss of any kind that is significant or chronic illness/pain is another example. Now an individual who is dealing with grief can and does bounce through all of the stages many times and in no particular order.
