I'm really thinking about trying out yWriter5 - it's a freeware for writing novels and I want to say it includes a character database. This link http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/applications/best-free-software-for-wr... is actually page 2 which includes yWriter5 but I wanted to post this particular site instead of the yWriter home because it has a lot of other writing freeware on it that you might want to look at. I use FocusWriter myself for the few contests I've entered through this website because it's really simple and has a word count at the bottom of the page.
What I actually did for my "rough" database is sketched them out on a yellow legal pad. If anyone is interested in character development FOR their database, I have a blog post about how I did it for this particular story here: http://leemillerwrites.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/plotting-along/
I have to say though, yesterday's exercise really helped me add a lot more depth to them, and I can't wait to see where my characters and story goes by the end of this!
