OT: So...Wait...does discussing the novel count as OT?
So, have you ever written a period piece and the main character insists he's from a different period than you're writing? William, my POV character (and someone of whom I have grown very fond in the last few days), should be an English Naval Captain from the early 1770s, just prior to the American Revolution. Unfortunately, every time I have a conversation with him (other people chat with their characters, yes?), he insists he's a Regency man and I need to bump the timeline up about 30 years at least. I was trying to avoid writing a Regency romance, but William just INSISTS. He says the uniforms are nicer, and the dresses are *cough* easier to take off. It works for the story, as there is ALWAYS a war in which a fine English Captain can die heroically...

But seriously. I did all this research. ALL THIS RESEARCH!!

Characters, man. When did they decide they get to control the story?

Also...just as a warning, there's going to come a time within the next few days when I come in here asking for some serious plot resolution issues. I've got the denouement figured out and most of the climax, but there are a few details I really need to hammer out and I'm probably going to need your help.
