The chateau itself has very little to do with the story. Actually pretty much nothing. The characters, one of whom is Swiss-French, the other from Marseilles, look at it and comment on it, but that's all. They leave Montreux the next day. I've been to Montreux and seen the chateau, and I think there are only one or two beds left inside - mostly to show what the lord of chateau would have slept in, but I don't think they are original furnishings and don't have any bearing on the story anyway. The mattresses I'm speaking of are not in the chateau itself but in an inn in the town. Perhaps an inn would have straw mattresses no matter what their clientele is. The time setting is fluid. I'm thinking somewhere between 1580-1630ish. Probably closer to the 1630 side of things since worldwide trade and merchant ships were becoming more and more common. But exact dates won't figure into it. At least not yet. I guess I should clarify that the question I'm asking when it comes to the languages is one of reader vs character consistency. Would the reader expect to understand all the landmarks or would he/she want to see a consistent character for the time period? ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** "Invalid Item" [Linked Poll's access is restricted.] |
