Well, wouldn't that mean you are right on track then? HA! The way I see it, the most important thing here is you are doing SOMETHING to move yourself forward on your main goal of finishing a novel. I see absolutely nothing wrong with sketching the minor characters and THEN going back to go into more detail about backgrounds of others and stories.
