Well, I wouldn't necessarily say I loathe him, nor do I hate him, mostly it's just that I dislike him. You see, the issue I have with Peter Straub is that I feel he frequently throws a good story idea into a book, and then turns it into a dragging, slow-paced description of every little fact that he can throw in, followed by an ending that 9 times out of 10 lets me down.
For example, I thought Floating Dragon was a fantastic read all the way through to the end, when, without mentioning any spoilers, it takes a turn towards the semi-ridiculous.
Honestly, I can't make much of a fair argument against Peter Straub. I do think he writes beautifully, and he is one of the great American writers, he's just an author I choose to read only once a year, if that.
Koko was a wonderful novel though, I must admit.
