They're all members of a community/village a day's journey from the temple at Uppsala. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_at_Uppsala)

So they live in a village and as such have more ties to their village than their clan. (It's only natural... For instance, when i'm living in foreign countries, although I am my own nationality, you first and formost care about the safety of your immeadiate vicinity)
