I apologise for entering the discussion at this late stage, this is a subject area I find most interesting.
As opposed to Kenneth's "Deep down I just know" approach I most often find I must be able to justify any position I hold. To do this I need to have something demonstrable to back up my arguments.
It occurs that I personally have neither the ability or resources to perform all the work necessary to back up an acceptance of all the many and varied theories of science.
So it comes down to a question of belief, Do I 'believe' the scientists or the priests? Are scientists just priests of a new religion ?

A Preston Rover,
There was a young Workington feller,
Who noticed the age of the average town dweller,
He wondered a lot where the old folks had got,
Now he knows and he hides in his cellar.
