Knowing what you believe and why is at least as important as the believing itself.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Gay Marriage?
I agree with what you have said but I think I have still flip flopped on this one. The arguments are too strong for allowing all marriage. I used to think that we should compromise and call it civil union between two gay people. But now I think that I would more strongly support a small change in the church. archweasel is right, we can't make the argument that God coined the phrase marriage because, even though I believe he did, no non-Christian will care. God did make marriage sacred to his people and this is important but at this point marriage has lost that connection to the church. I think the best compromise at this point is exactly what archweasel suggested, I think jokingly...The change should occur in the church. It would certainly be easier than fighting for something that is already lost in so many states and countries, there is no way to go back now. The church should coin a new phrase, specific for Christians that means specifically "Holy Sacrament between Man and Woman".

The only problem I see with this, and it is a dozy, is that this could facilitate the degradation of non-Christian marriages. There is already a boom in France of people not getting married at all, not committing to each other at all, just starting to have kids and raise them. This damages the "family unit" in my opinion. It is important for a child's parents to be married, to have publicly expressed their Love, not just their passions and lust. Getting rid of all the religious affiliations of marriage I think more people would take it much lighter, even non-Christians to a some degree.
