Many groups are restricted to members but usually they have an information page. You can click groups at the top of the screen or if you know they type of group you want, then type novel group etc...in the blank search bar at the top of the page.

Persevering Poets Presents is a great group for poets.
The Novel Workshop is great for novelists.

Many contest are open. Try searching for the Writer's Cramp. A fun low pressure contest.
