I've only outlined one novel and wrote the other two blind. Everyone is hardwired differently and some people won't write a grocery list without an outline. Personally, I don't like them. I feel stifled and confined when working from outlines. However, I did take start a project that just whipped my arse until I stopped and placed the major scenes in an excel spreadsheet. The story was too convoluted in my head without some structure. It helped immensely.
