I don't have much thoughts on narrative styles, as long as they work for the story. I've never put a book down because they were using the authorial style, or whatever. As long as it works well in the story I'm pretty happy. As far as writing, I've never really explored any of these. I've thought about using authorial intrusion once or twice, but I've never really been able to use it skillfully.
What's wrong with archaic? We keep reading those authors, don't we? They're still considered good, aren't they? After all, classical mechanics is still exceedingly useful to learn (well, within the field) despite the fact that much of it has been proven incorrect by special relativity and quantum theory. We still get married, and even use that same old ceremony. We still use knives and eat off of plates for godsake. The archaic quality in something doesn't necessarily make it bad.
