Well, I don't have much experience, just one novel in first draft (for ages) and another about a quarter in. With this wealth of experience I can say that it's hard work coming up with a plot. There's a fair amout of staring at blank paper involved.
For me it was sitting down day after day and looking for ideas and fiddling around with them. For example, what would the setting be. Look anywhere for ideas. I looked at weird roleplaying books. I've taken settings and characters from games, characters from Jerry Springer's guests (all evolved of course so they become mine). Try 'what if' questions. Like 'What if her husband died?' 'What would my character do if something threatened the Kingdom?'
What sort of things do you want to happen to your character? Do you want them to change through their experiences (I think this happens in the best stories), perhaps overcome adversity., Or maybe become bitter and twisted. Maybe you want to kill one or two characters off, or send them off on a trip somewhere?
