But who's to be the judge how well the story works? It's a very subjuctive thing, and often the timing and, not the quality of the writing. All you can really do is throw it out there and hope for the best; there's no way to tell how well the book will be recieved, even if one knows about and pays attention to such things. You're getting into something too inherently complex and random to really understand, at least as we know such things. I'm sure there have been some great books that have been lost to the ages, and some horrible books that have been great hits, simply because of timing.
