I think you have to feel how your characters do otherwise it's not real. Maybe I'm crazy (ok yeah I know I am) but I feel what my characters do in general. Of course the scenes I write generally come out of my mood so if I'm sad I write the parts where he/she is sad. I've even cried when my characters were.
