yeah. i suppose i assume my characters aren't universal because they're me. just me. maybe different sides of me, but i can't assume everyone's going to be motivated by what i think is exciting, or smart, or funny. or heinous.
i think other people may be more skilled at creating a new, unique persona out of the ether
--having a point of view outside of their experience. the whole imagination thing.
i like to think research helps, in discovering how others think & feel, but it's along way from actually living in their skin. as writers, we have to be able to put on new 'skins' as we create these characters, as we communicate our messages. we have to be them, don't we?
