I can't really say much on this subject since until you posted this I hadn't really figured out that I have a muse. Mine is my life itself. If my sister is playing loud music and won't turn it off no matter how much my family pleads with her I'll start writing a character or a poem around that. It sounds silly, but its true. A muse can help or hinder. Not having one probably makes the work go faster since you don't have to get in touch with your muse, but having one lets you study the fine details of what you are writing about.
Many successful writers have had muses. The one that first comes to my mind is A. A. Milne and Christopher Robin. Mark Twain wrote about his experience on a steam boat. Edgar Allen Poe, wrote about his wife in Annabelle Lee, (his other muse, if you pardon my saying so, was probably beer).
