I think that's true. I mean you can know that something exists but with out doing research or having a working knowledge of it how can you actually write about it and make it believeable. I've done tons of research on something I'm writing because I want to make sure what I write is at least believeable and if I'm unsure about something then I have a friend with extensive knowledge of the subject to help me. I would never try to write about something I don't have any clue about. What would the fun be in that? I want to enjoy what I'm writing about.
Another thing I was thinking about is that some people are lazy and don't want to take the time to do research to write about something.
