I think most writers hit those dry patches. I know I've hit my fair share of them. When it happens to me, I play the "what if" game. I look at the existing plot arcs or characters, and throw them a curve. What if my antagonist suddenly shows a kind heart for small children and old people? What if my protag suddenly demonstrates a sadistic streak and beats the heck out of his best friend? What if kindly old Uncle Joe decides he likes to dress up in Aunt Martha's nighties and slurp up some Bunny Tracks ice cream while watching Days of Our Lives ...until Aunti Martha comes home early from work and catches him? Sometimes, the dry patch doesn't require wild "what ifs." Just a minor twist to the plot, or a character trait revelation.
