You have to have some kind of knowledge of a subject to write about it weather you have known it by experience or research. At the same time there is also an element of creativity that goes along with it as well. For example Harry Potter. Many of the problems the trio face are the normal ones of teens growing up so that is the "writing what you know" the rest of it, Hogwarts and the magical world is all made up. Isn't that partly what Fiction is all about? Creating a world around some sort of real world issue. I don't know maybe I'm crazy after all it's 2:48AM and I can't seem to go back to sleep.
