Regarding passion, I've met a few writers who make a a comfortable income playing wordsmith, but would rather be doing something, almost anything else for a buck. However, the vast majority of authors seem to have a spark, a zest for words and building of worlds, that non-writers simply can't understand. Pretty much like I can't understand the wonders associated with chasing a golf ball over the lower forty-eight, or running triathlons. (I did the equivalent of triathlons in the service and as a tactical officer many times, but it had little to do with passion, and everything to do with dodging various projectiles.)
I've never completed a novel that I didn't "feel it" on some emotional level. In my humble opinion, wrting a story that you're emotionally engaged with is one of the great pleasures in life.
