I didn't read this as being negative, necessarily - if you expect everything to turn to sh** and have no hope, that's negative and self-defeating. That leads you to give up and stop trying. However, if you hope for things, work towards making them happen but don't bet your happiness on the outcome, and expect nothing, that's different.
