Ah, okay, I got ya. That's another long-running subject of debate. "Are modern stories of preternatural/supernatural creatures, places, and events grounded in truth, or are they based on myths created by gifted and imaginative storytellers from ages past." I don't know if we will ever know the answer, all though I personally favor the latter. I do know this much. We have stories that date back to ancient Sumer, some 3,500 years befor the birth of Christ, that contain both benevolent and malevolent deities. There were proscribed methods of worhshiping some, and rituals and talismans to protect against the other. Almost every culture has stories of evil spirits or monsters, and the methodolgy to combat protect against them. There are also old tales of the Fey, fairies, and "good spirits." Interesting that in terms of literature, "monsters" seem to far outnumber the "good" supernatural entities. Many theologians believe such creatures were "invented" by shaman/priests, for various reasons. (Controlling an unruly populace through fear is only one example of those "reasons") Then village elders or traveling storytellers would embellsih the tales and keep them alive. You'll also find some few who think perhaps those ancient tales were grounded in truth, and such creatures have faded from this plane over time. Interesting question, and certainly food for thought. Unfortunately, it probably doesn't have a supportable answer due to a lack of empirical evidence. (Lack of evidence doesnt't mean something doesn't exist. Just means we can't prove it did. ;) ) Just my humble opinion. Any other takers on this question?
