Seems that back in the day, I read a couple old vamp pieces in which the author made no attempt to explain them. They just..."were." I recall liking the books very much.
That said, I confess that I sometimes have trouble with suspension of disbelief. I need some degree of plausibility in order to engage. The author doesn't have to drag me through the entire genealogy, explain the Big Bang, or give me a lesson in biological evolution. But the author does need to make some small attempt to explain why an anomaly exists. If authors take the time to do this, whether in a paragraph or a single line of prose, I'm willing to meet them half-way.
