The best vamp series I've ever read didn't do much to foster any romantic notions. Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" series is down-in-the trenches hardcore action/horror. Lumley takes the vampire mythos to new heights, complete with previously unexplored powers and attributes. In fact, in Lumley's story, he alludes to the notion that the "first vampire, Shaitan was "fallen" from former glory. Shaitan. Satan. Fallen.
A nice twist. That's not to say that a few of Lumley's Wamphyri Lords and Ladies aren't seductive. But, the human lover(s) are in for major surprises once the foreplay is over. *grins*
Personally, I do like the Vamp stuff, if only because the lore surrounding vampires is massive. It's an near-endless supply of material for the writer.
