No, because there's an encoding system intended to curb global piracy. Basically, a DVD is given a certain level of encryption so it will only play on certain DVD players. For example, Canada and the US are in region 1, so DVDs for sale in Canada and the US are encoded for region 1 and are only usable on region 1 DVD players (in other words DVD players manufactured for the US and Canada). I think the UK is in region 2, but I need to do some research to confirm that. In any case, that UK DVD is not going to work in a US DVD player due to the encryption.
