It does mostly depend on the book. For my mystery novel, the only research I did was a brief consultation with a divorce lawyer (I needed a bit of info about custody battles); everything else just came out of my head. For my current book, I've done a fair bit of research because there were things I just couldn't write about without first educating myself. I still have a lot of research ahead of me, too...but although I'm a whiz at finding excuses for not writing, research is never an excuse -- I HATE research. If I was rich, I'd hire someone else to do it for me.
