Red Opium is a self help and support group for self harmers.
The name was suggested by Molly Welsch
(a member of this group), after a poem she wrote when she was younger.

"Red Opium"

Crimson blemish
was all she saw;
scarlet numbing
felt in her soul.

Laden maiden
with blade in hand;
vague persona
becoming clearer.

Red opium
is in her veins;
penetrating
her whole being.

The name seemed rather appropriate for this group as self injury so easily becomes addictive.

SI is a coping method that we use when our emotions become too strong for us to deal with. There is no shame in being a self harmer, it is our way of coping just as an alcoholic or drug user have theirs. All coping methods are normal, there is no wrong way to cope. We do what we have to to survive.

BUT..... There are BETTER methods of coping. We just have to find our own, find the ones that suit us best. That is the aim of this group. To help us help ourselves to find better ways of living.

As a member of this group you must be willing to help yourself, we've all seen in EF and other groups where members simply sit around posting woe is me, this group will not allow that. There will be days when we simply want to moan, that is allowed to a certain extent, but if a member is not willing to help themselves, it is a waste of their time and ours to allow them to remain in the group.

You must be prepared to help yourself and others.

It is not a fast cure, a magic pill, but together we can help each other and in doing so help ourselves.
