I actually, have no idea what to use Gift Points for.
I have over 44K GP and do not know what they can be used for - most of the time I just give them away.

Can anyone tell me what you's use them for?

They can be used as a currency to give people merit badges, awardicons etc. Some people do a considerable amount of reviewing and use the GPs they earn to pay for their annual subscriptions.

Oh, I thought, and I don't know why, that subscriptions had to be paid with real money.

In addition to what Dave Ryan Author Icon said, you might check out "Gift Points" Open in new Window. and related entries on gift points from WDC's Reference Guide ("Writing.Com 101" Open in new Window.).

Oh and if you have enough gift points (including shipping costs), you can pay for anything in the WDC Shop with GPs.


Can you upgrade your membership with gift points, or do you have to use actual currency?

All things related to membership renewal or upgrade can be done with WdC Gift Points. You can even give someone else an upgrade as a random act of kindness.

Both actually. You could use say 499,500 GPs to get yourself a year-long Upgrade Membership, or use a Debit/Credit card to spend $49.95 for the same thing, depending on what's more convenient to you.

Sometimes though, there are sales, especially during the first week of September.
