I will always remember Black House by Peter Straub and Stephen King. I liked the novel, but it wasn't easy to get into it because the authors spent a long time describing the setting before the story got going. I have to confess to getting a little impatient.
I love maps, and I do like to know where the characters are, and what they are facing, but I also like for there to be room for my own imagination. I think it's nice that we each picture characters (slightly) different and I think that the same can apply for settings. In any case, details being offered along the way is better for me than pages of detail in one go. My attention is likely to wander at that point.
