WELCOME TO AIRDALE’S “3D-CHARACTERS” WORKSHOP.

This is a “bring your own character” workshop. You will be developing YOUR character, not just learning general character development tactics.

Objectives

1) Developing your character. Never mind your readers, do YOU know your character?
2) Presenting your character. How do you show the reader that Pete’s brave but shy?
3) Manipulating the reader’s emotions. Do you want the reader to love, fear or pity Shy Pete? How do you evoke the “right” attitude in the reader?

Textbooks

Character and Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
Characters, Emotions, and Viewpoint by Nancy Kress
(you do not need to purchase these books, but I will be working from them. Google Books has previews you can use.)

Getting Started:

1) In your Port, create a folder titled “Character Folder: Character Name”. In this course we will be adding various items to this folder. I will be reviewing and grading this folder.

2) Find a picture of your character. Huh? Imagine a movie based on your book. What might your character look like? Feel free to use photos of actors, cartoons, or anything else. The picture you find may not be perfect, but it should present your character in a way that you, the author, are comfortable with.

All character photos will be posted on the forum so that we all have an idea who we’re working with. Because of this, the image item must be 100x100 pixels and linked to your Character Folder.

3) Post an intro message.Post a message to the forum introducing yourself and the genre your characters are from. If there is something specific you are hoping to get from the workshop or have questions, please tell me.

Your intro message should also include the item numbers for your Character Image and Character Folder, and a one-sentence description of your character.

BLACKBOARD

Lesson 1: Character Bio

Before we get into writing techniques, lets learn more about our characters. Follow the link below to a fill-in-the-blank mini bio exercise. The bio has two parts, a basic practical background and an emotional background. Create an item in your folder titled “Mini Bio” and copy-paste the questions into there (obviously, answer the questions). Then post a message to the forum saying you’ve completed the assignment. I (and others, please) will access it through your Character Folder. This is a great exercise to do with two characters simultaneously because it helps you learn the differences between them.

In your post, also comment on the following:

1) What did you learn while filling out the bios?

2) Some characters change throughout the story, other essentially stay the same. For example, in a coming-of-age story, we expect the protagonist to mature as a result of the events in the story. In a detective story, especially a series featuring the same detective, the protagonist is essentially the same person at the end as he was in the beginning. Do you think your character is a “changer” or a “stayer”?
