The second of my collections of poems written for "Express It In Eight."
As usual these days, I choose blog format because it offers more space for the work.

Statistics

Be careful what you wish for,
be careful what you say,
the thing you are describing
may seem another way -
Olympus Mons may tower,
the highest of all mounts,
but Mars don’t have no sea,
so what level do you count?

Prompt: The tallest known mountain in our solar system, Olympus Mons, is found on Mars. Its base is the size of Arizona, and the highest point is over 16 miles tall. (Earth’s Everest is 5.5 miles above sea level.)

November

November, the conman,
creeps in with a smile
says the word “balmy”
and gentle his style.

Down through the dwindling days
his smile fades away,
and bitter his final glance,
cold in the end his stay.

Prompt: Write a poem that personifies the month of November.

Ether

I'm being consumed by the ether
dispersed into particles in space
spread thinly through the universe
and dissolved in insignificance.

I knew a man who took ether
inhaling it in huge gulps but staying
conscious yet in ecstacy unbound -
they say it murders brain cells.

Torrent

Monsoon, monsoon,
flood disaster,
but also boon
and climate master.

Oh, Bangladesh,
on Ganges delta,
rain-fed flesh
while seeking shelter.

Neither

Come sit on the fence with me,
the finest of places to be,
for both sides you’ll always see,
and of bias you’re forever free.

Don’t choose either this or that,
and be neither slender nor fat,
be both bowler and at the bat,
all because of where you are sat!

Aquamarine

Aqua and marine
water of the ocean
that clear cool colour
of light reflected
from sand under the sea
flickering between
blue and green
aquamarine.

Accuracy

The mot juste
will give you a boost
and add to your writing
the meaning most biting.

Don’t be in a hurry,
no need to scurry,
your real satisfaction
comes from precise exaction.

Seriously

Many a true word said in jest
and many a lie as well
perhaps to be silent is best
with nothing at all to sell.

The fact is we hide from each other
afraid to show who we are
or go to a great deal of bother
to speak with intent to do harm.

Of Islands

I saw a man who did complain
at loneliness his deepest pain
yet while he sat there all alone
he set up fences made of stone

Though his eyes were inward turned
it was himself that he had spurned
for how could others love the man
who knew himself the bogeyman?

Line count: 8

For Express It In Eight, 11.18.24
Prompt: No man is an island.

Takeaway

Bring on the curry, Murray,
but do not worry in your hurry
lest, scatter-brained in all your flurry,
you get it from a pub in Surrey.

The lengthy wait for delivery
would overstretch forgivery
and leave us all a-shivery
and I, for one, quite snivery.

For Express It In Eight, 11.17.24
Prompt: Write a poem about a spicy food.
