Man, box over head and cornered.

Boxed

Boxed into a corner,
without escape,
arguments defeated,
but now retreated
to a position,
if not impregnable,
at least blind to nemesis.

Offshore stack or tower of rock separate from the mainland.

Stack

Geographers call it a stack.
for stacked it is,
layer upon layer,
stratum upon strata,
nibbled by wind and waves,
banished from the shore,
proud and aloof,
displaying its nakedness.

Metal Musings

Plastic may be fantastic
but you can have a metal kettle,
and elastic is quite gymnastic,
but with metal you can fettle.

It’s iron you can rely on
and copper is a topper,
brass has got some class,
and zinc will make you think.

An Answer

England’s history lies not in the horse,
though a noble beast, agreed.
For Scythians and the hordes of Genghis Khan,
Comanche and Sioux, born to ride the plains,
and the Irish and their racing steeds,
true equine peoples these.

But for us it is the humble oak,
donors of those wooden walls
that kept our freedom safe.

As Dead As

The late dodo and the doornail
(both as dead as can ever be)
having decided to set sail
upon the Dead Sea, fittingly,
laid a course for the utter East,
one last time to see the sunrise,
only to meet Aristophanes,
together to fly through the skies.

Old beaten up truck.

Classic

Finally, out to grass,
the old warhorse stands,
rust brown and battle scarred,
in the pasture of its reward,
dreaming of the days of toil,
all cylinders working,
pride of the hero farmer.

In the lane, a restorer names his price.

Outside My Window, June Steals a Day from May

Summer clothes the landscape in green,
the trees spread their leafy burdens in the sun,
the grass grows thick, lush and long,
bringing the staccato buzz of mowers
and the scent of manicured lawns in the air.

Thoughts turn somnolent in the steady heat,
a breeze brushes briefly, lightly on the skin;
we dream of other summers, other places.

Animals at a watering hole.

Invitation

Come to my party,
said the tiger to the deer,
it’s going to be most hearty,
serving water ‘stead of beer,
the elephant is coming,
the crocodile and hare,
the bee will be there humming,
the whole jungle will be there.

Two-faced tree regards two differing worlds.

Man and Tree

Two-faced Janus speaks
of a world divided dark and light,
of futures bleak
and choices bright,
yet stands he in between you see,
his being in both sides is rooted,
his arguments have long been muted,
in balance he has learned to be.

Mississippi

Downstream, the river relaxes,
unmindful of its tempestuous youth,
it slows its pace, spreads wide
across the plain, undecided
upon direction, bending and looping,
leaving ox bow lakes in its wake,
seeking the ocean and its rest,
yet unhurried.
