Alternatives

To party in a chicken coop,
amongst the feathers and the poop,
of celebrations not the brightest,
with tact surely the lightest,
without mention of wings and nuggets
(the atmosphere bound to bug it),
but worse to accept an invitation
to Scott’s Antarctic assignation.

Remember Pandora

Sometimes it’s a mystery
(can’t wait until it’s history),
but always hidden in a box
(don’t open if you like your socks),
the great, big, glaring question
(no clues at all to mention),
your curiosity on fire
(be careful - you will be the pyre).

Impossible

They said it was impossible -
I refused to believe.
They said, “Don’t waste your time.”
I blew it anyway.
They told me that I’d learn,
That I was too young to know,
But I kept on trying.

Sometimes they’re just right.

Astronomy Domine

Out there in the vast abyss of space,
a thousand splendid suns
(and several rather ropey ones)
shine down with pitiless face
on worlds of molten lavas rife,
or colder than ice, a frozen core,
gem-hard deserts, chemical shores,
but it’s only here that shelters life.

White Noise

The background of our lives,
civilisation’s hush,
the hum of the deep freeze,
time in elevators,
the journey’s constant motion,
progress droning on,
we paint succeeding days,
the flat, white hue of fear.

Temptation

Oh me, oh my,
I think I spy
a key lime pie,
and so I sigh,
my hopes so high,
the time is nigh.

Insulin be damned
in my mouth it’s rammed!

Rail Trail

Through this leafy cutting the trains once ran,
all steam and heat and billows of noise,
ground shaking beneath our feet, brakes shrieking,
but long gone now and the tracks removed.
A sylvan path for dogs and walkers it’s become,
a stroll between the season’s trees and bushes,
nature’s idyll where once was steely bustle.

Dark nights a distant whistle still blows around the bend.

Sea Food

The world is my oyster,
though to some, it’s a cloister,
and, if the earth’s sea food,
it’s on lobsters I brood.

Far from being selfish,
I’m happy with most shellfish,
and am never averse
to mussels or worse.

Figure of a woman in branches shaped by the wind.

In the Wind

She stands, a tree in winter,
wind blowing through bare branches,
unmoved by life’s hard weather,
a tower against the storm.

Yet hear the tempest’s tearing breath
give tortured voice in hollows worn,
see, the lady slowly shatters
in pieces far behind her strewn.

Red and yellow umbrellas, red and yellow leaves.

Umbrellas

I only ever thought to please you,
autumn colours as agreed,
red your favourite, this I knew,
red as the trees do seem to bleed.

Sometimes you make me want to bellow,
I wonder if you really listen,
I’ve always said my favourite’s yellow,
it’s true, in you there’s something missin’.
