Toulouse-Lautrec Henri de, you old rapscallion, deformed and bent, and yet unbroken, you delved for companionship in the decadence of a Paris abandoned to the tawdry delights of hedonism, found friendship, beauty, comfort for your genius to render bright. Your voice rips through our prejudice. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 08.17.21 Prompt: Toulouse-Lautrec painting. |
Fusion The marriage of opposites. like a pewter plate stood upright on a wooden window sill. the weight of five hundred years pressing it into the grain until, caught fast in fusion, wood and pewter as one, it stands immovable today. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 08.16.21 Prompt: Fusion. Note: In a 16th Century house in England, in a window, there is a pewter plate that leans against the glass, its rim resting on the wooden sill. Time has forced its weight deep into the grain of the wood so that it is now locked within the sill. Plate and sill can no longer be separated. It is the most unlikely example of fusion that I have ever seen. |
Clearer Than Water There is something magical in the ocean, close up, and the bottom white sand, the water as clear as crystal held to the light, lucid, limpid, laced with the shadows of gentle waves that lap at one’s knees, and the little fish, not swimming but flying, over a submerged world so sharp, that each grain stands out to be counted. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 08.14.21 Prompt: Lucid. |
Think Ahead To walk under a ladder is bad luck they say, but what is even badder is to bump it on the way. Old Charlie up there painting might distracted be, forget all of his training, and fall down on top of thee And Charlie’s not a lightweight, he’s broken many a scale; I do not fancy your fate under that most ponderous male. Better to own a black cat. Line count: 8 + 5 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 08.13.21 Prompt: 8 + 5 lines on UNDER A LADDER. |
Are We There Yet? Sharp the pain of the paper cut, deep the ache of the flu, gripes indigestion in the gut, Ache of arthritis grew. So the tale of the passing years adds to the weight of age, till we’re left grasping at good cheer by turning another page. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 08.12.21 Prompt: Sharp. |
Flamenco Her haughty eye surveys the crowd she stands unmoving, hand on hip, the other held aloft, arm in sinuous curve echoing down her spine and legs, her pose disdainful, proud and wild, still as a statue, she stares us down, then castanet clicks, heel taps an answer, guitar strings sound, the dance begins. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 08.11.21 Prompt: Dance. |
Hog in the Limelight I met a man who had a pig, he kept it in a bag. I thought it did not look too big, He said “Don’t look for snags; the pig is young but it will grow, amazed you’ll be tomorrow.” I bought it, took it home to see A pig that’s known as guinea. Line count: 8 Rhymed ababccdd For Express It In Eight, 08.10.21 Prompt: A pig in a poke. |
Raindrop Raindrop in the spider’s web clear bright lens of morning light sparkles with its silver siblings strung upon symmetric net turns arachnid’s patient trap to a masterpiece enchanting there between the forest fingers hangs precipitation’s jewel. Line count: 8 Free verse, trochaic tetrameter For Express It In Eight, 08.09.21 Prompt: Raindrop. |
Grackle Old Bob Frost, in eight-line form, speaks of baptism from a passing crow and shows us how, beyond the norm, we might write wisdom within his shadow Memory shows me a rascal grackle fixing me with his jewelled red eye over discarded, stale burger he cackles, and I salute him in reply. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 08.08.21 Prompt: Frost’s poem, Dust of Snow. |
Scraping the Barrel The dreaded day arrives and Philippe Petit walks the high wire between a lighthouse and Mr Coleman’s Mustard Mansion, while I confess a dearth of inspiration and a trick for line eight. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 08.07.21 Prompts: Lighthouse, mustard and Philippe Petit. |
