Freedom

As the feather wafts,
unguided by desire,
adrift on the wind,
the aimless life floats
on the currents of fate,
spinning and turning,
a swirling chip of being,
ever awaiting landfall.

Joinery

It may be the duty of glue to join
one to another and this to that,
a carpenter’s emissary of unity,
the shipwright’s hold on plain sailing,
a bond to make and to mend,
the go-between to bring together.
But the weld makes them both
like one as they share each other.

Prompt: Glue, Join and Duty.
Note: Many years ago, I had a hobby of building slot cars from scratch. This would not have been possible had I not discovered a polystyrene glue that actually melted the component parts together, rather than just holding on to them through its own strength.

Greek Philosophy

Do we feel sorrow for the task of Sisyphus
or rejoice in his just deserts?
And what of Prometheus,
with liver torn out by an eagle
and growing another for the next day?
Perhaps best not to interfere;
those Greek gods were easily annoyed
and inventive in their punishments.

Decisions, Decisions

“Settle for the offer,” they said,
"You won’t get a better one.
Take what you can while
the taking’s good - who knows
what the future holds and
having and holding is what counts.”

I listened then upped stakes
to settle elsewhere.

In Transit

Elegance departs the body
in old age, as joints groan
and muscles strain. Pain dictates
the course of movement,
the ragged path of possibility
to gain the chosen goal.
Wisdom now decides
on feasibility and method.

The chocolate palace was fine
until summer came along
You’re sure these are my glasses?
They don’t seem right to me.
Had a job in the House of Mirrors
but it affected my vision.
Life inside the space ship
of the alien amoeba.

Rhymin’ Time

The old man stumbles
but doesn’t tumble.
He merely mumbles,
“I may be humble
but not so dumble
as to cause a rumble
and I don’t crumble.
It’s called a fumble.”

Tick Tock

Like our skin,
time wrinkles with age,
compressing the moments
as they hurry by
and, in harmony with it,
we hasten towards
our appointed hour
when all stops.

Daydreaming

If I keep my attention on far away
when what matters is here and now,
if I gaze through the window
and ignore your valuable lesson,
if I seem distracted and elsewhere
in the midst of gloom and doom,
it’s only that my eyes are fixed
on another world entirely.

Notes: Almost too much inspiration from today’s two prompts, Distance and Daydream. Both make me think of these:

An Amazing Solution

Someone once told me
how to solve a maze;
always choose to go left
was his brief solution.
I’ve tried it in theory
and it seems to work
in getting to the centre.
Escaping is another thing.
