Yesterday, I had my Harry Potter meet up.
It was fun, and there was a great insight from a 10-year-old boy.
When I said that my 'worst villain' was Gilderoy Lockhart, the 10-year-old agreed, saying that Lockhart was a 'villain by choice'. That was an AHA moment!

Then, at the same venue (Atta Galatta, Indiranagar), there was a panel discussion. I was part of the first half of the discussion, 'creating stories', and my particular contribution was 'character'. The second half of the discussion was between the moderator and the author of the book that was being launched, which I haven't read.

It was good. It always is nice to go back and get different perspectives on the basics.

"This is exciting!"

"Stop saying it's exciting. Let's get to work."

Ekta was right. It was time they got to work. After all, it's not often that teachers trust 10-year-olds with the production of a play all by themselves. They had to prove they could do it.

"Now," said Ekta, taking charge. She was class leader and she got to direct the play. "I'll be Cinderella, of course."

There were a few mutters, but nobody argued a loud.

"Once upon a time ..." Ekta began. Then she stopped.

"We need Time," she said.

"Time for what?" Akash asked.

"No, Time. Time is a character and someone needs to stand on him. It says Once Upon A Time."

"I'll be Time," Shyam volunteered, thinking it would be nice to have someone on him. He could threaten to toss them if they didn't do what he said.

"Okay, Shyam is Time. Now we need a step-mother. Neepa, you be the wicked step-mother."

"Why me?"

"Because you are the tallest. We need someone shorter than you for the ugly sisters. Meher and Denaz, you be the ugly sisters."

"We're not ugly."

"We can put make up to make you ugly. Shyam, why are you raising your hand?"

"I need to go to the bathroom."

"Wait till the bell rings."

"I can't."

"You shouldn't have drunk so much lemonade," Akash remarked.

"Listen, I need to go to the bathroom," Shyam insisted, but Ekta ignored him and went on.

"We need someone who looks old for the Fairy Godmother. Sakina, you be the Fairy Godmother."

There was a disturbance. Shyam had pushed aside the people next to him and was rushing for the door.

"What's happening?" Ekta asked, looking up from the diary she'd been noting characters down in.

Akash replied, “Time is running out.”

"I'm going to nail this," Niyati declared, as she rolled up the rug.

"Don't be so confident," cautioned her best friend, Delna. "Those rugs are hard to clean."

"How hard can it be?" Niyati scoffed. "People clean rugs all the time. After that I'm going to do every curtain in the house."

Delna sighed. Then she grinned. She would get some fun out of this, she decided.

"Hey," gasped Niyati. "Help me carry this thing."

"No," Denal said. "If I help you you wouldn't have nailed it yourself."

"Don't be mean."

Giggling, Delna carried one end of the rug and they took it to the bathroom.

"It won't fit in the bucket," Niyati lamented.

"Put it in the tub."

"I'll have to fill the tub first."

She put both 'cold' and 'hot' taps to full, and when the tub was decently filled, put in some detergent.

"Hey," Delna said. "Not detergent, shampoo. You don't do good rugs with detergent."

"You mean I'll have to empty this and fill it again and use good shampoo?"

"You will."

"What a waste. Let's wash something else in this before letting the water out."

"I'll bring Rover."

It wasn't the dog's bath day and he howled as the girls submerged him in the lukewarm water.

"NIYATI!" came a yell.

"What, Pappa?"

"Your Mom gets allergic if there are dog hairs in the tub, as you jolly well know! Go wash Rover in the yard!"

"Yes, Pappa, sorry."

"Get every hair out of the tub and clean it properly."

It took fifteen minutes to hunt down every dog hair. Niyati leaned against the bathroom door.

"Now we wash the rug?" Delna asked innocently.

"Let's just draw the CURTAIN on this endeavour, shall we?"
