I think you hit it on the nail with #1 - that we have allowed, through apathy, the rise to power of leaders either by self-appointment or manipulating votes, who control what the masses are fed in bits of bytes with selective historical recall to instill fear and isolate groups by gender, social, age, religion, educational, cultural and other subgroups.
We as writers have an opportunity to shake up the corrupted non-functioning 'system' and incite thought and exploration with our words - be it prose or poetry, journalism or fiction - that can make humans see their intrinsic similarities and think of what each can do to build and create a working world.
