Every gardener needs many items and much advice to plant and cultivate a successful garden. These are some of the ideas and advice I am finding to become a better gardener.
Yes, I did talk about organization.
While submitting and getting rejected, I understood I don't quite read the guidelines properly, and if I do, I forget what they were about by the time I am ready to write a story...
I have bought a folder. Inside I placed colorful separators.
1. A to Z, where I put one publisher's guidelines per sheet of paper (yellow for mags, green for books). I write up the market, the max lenghth, the address and submission options (snail mail, email...)
2. Month by month separators where I place markets' deadlines.
I hope this helps. If you need more details, let me know,
Kind regards,
Isa.
Even getting published by the Guard is a good step. In the outside world it is harder to know what folks are looking for. Writer's and Poetry Market are great, but only guidelines. Many publishers have on-line sites and increasingly one can submit on-line. Be careful of copyrights though. Also be prepared for rejection slips as your writings may not fit what the publisher is looking for. A rejection doesn't mean it's bad. Just resubmit elsewhere.
"As She Felt the Master's Call" is fine, but the poetics could use some tweaking. Though you have already used it and dedicated it, it can still come out as version 2. I give the unsolicited advice of choosing a favorite hymn that follows an 8.6.8.6 meter like a ballad or 8.7.8.7, 7.6.7.6, etc. (xXxXxXxX;xXxXxX, an iambic pattern seems to be most common pattern I can find in reading it) Do this by choosing which verse 'sings' to you the best and go from there. You've already set up an xaxa rhyme scheme throughout that seems to work well.
The other two preach. I don't like being preached at so that is my prejudice right up front. In poetry, I think it is better to show than tell. However, find out if that is what the site is looking for. May be.
