Hehe. I believe many parents go insane the moment they have children, and our rationality gets thrown out the window. I've caught myself doing these such things, too. They make NO sense, and I ask myself later... why in the world I did that.
My kids, however, won't sleep past 7 a.m., no matter how late they go to bed. So if they go to bed too late, we have some seriously cranky kids in the morning. Oof!
You had Jake in your family for a long time, hun. It's going to take some time. Just remember, no one is truly gone until they have been forgotten. As long as Jake is never forgotten, he's never REALLY gone.
I have five children and I KNOW I've done this myself...but I have to say it was over a price much higher than five bucks. But I also allow the children to get something that would be an even price tag.
Usually though since someone doesn't 'have' children shouldn't step on parenting toes. It will hurt the friendship. I have to agree though, this is wrong to tell the kid the zoo was her idea and mom paid for it...big deal, mom and dad are to pay for family fun time. The only time that anyone should state parents paid for something...is when the child wants something of great value-the child should save their money, either from chores, birthday, Christmas money...it really allows the child to proud of their selves and might even reconsider what the want to buy since they can see how difficult it is to spend a high price.
